Dec 2009 - Christmas Cake Competition 2009

Entries this year were again of a very high standard, with innovative designs and lots of evidence of resident and staff involvement. Chief Executive Nigel Reed had the difficult - if pleasurable - task of judging the four county winners.

As you can see below, two of the entries, Southfield, Lincolnshire, and Salmonsbury, Gloucestershire, had Father Christmas stretched out on a sofa in front of a fireplace, relaxing after a hard night’s work. In both scenes, Santa was having a well earned drink – in Lincolnshire he had a glass of beer, but in Gloucestershire he had a bottle of champagne. Clearly the perks of the job are greater in the Cotswolds!

The cake from Fives Court, Wiltshire, a lovely carol scene, had the best supporting documentation showing that lots of residents joined in the baking and decorating.

The overall winner for this year, however, is the entry from

Stirlings, Oxfordshire

Christmas Cake winnerAs the picture shows, this cake took the form of a “pyramid” cake.  The resulting "Christmas Tree" consisted of 40 small cakes – each one individually decorated and named for a resident.

Well done to everyone, Merry Christmas and Happy Eating!
