On the 22nd June Coombe End Court hosted a “night of entertainment under the stars,” with a brilliant musical line-up, ending with a showing of Bohemian Rhapsody on the front lawn.
Jo Baines and her fun-tastik ukulele group came to play for us at 6pm, whilst people were arriving. The sun was shining, Megan's bubble bar had the cocktails flowing, and the BBQ was wafting the smell of burgers and hot dogs throughout the home. Add to that the addition of our new palm tree centrepiece out the front of the building along with the ukuleles, it all felt rather tropical!
We had some fabulous raffle prizes including a total of 12 tickets to the speakeasy festival in Devizes, 4 tickets to the Swindon Peculiar Gin Festival, Laser Quest voucher, Pizza Express voucher, entry to @Bristol for 4, majestic wines bottle of vino, signed Rick Stein cook book, TITCO tickets, 2x signs from the recycled sign company, tombola prizes from the letter room, and many others!
After the Ukuleles, the duo “Sweet Nightingale” entertained the crowd whilst they bathed in the weather, did some impromptu line dancing and enjoyed their picnics. Kaidey's cakes going down particularly well until the light finally began to fade.
Whilst the sun set, there was just enough time for a couple of queen songs to be sung beautifully by our residents, visitors and activity coordinator on the big screen karaoke. At this point the manager and head of care, Amanda Palfrey and Kelly Edwards strategically disappeared knowing what would come their way otherwise. But on the whole, the crowd welcomed having a microphone thrust at them, and they were surprisingly good!
As the film started, people hunkered down under their blankets, tucked into their popcorn and sweets, and enjoyed what residents and visitors believed to be one of THE best films ever shown at an open-air cinema.
We were quite light on the ground for helpers, but it could not have been done without the hard work of every single one of you!
Time definitely needs to be taken to thank the volunteers and organisers of the day, Mandy, Kelly, Alison Andre, Sharon Waters, Dean Palfrey, Lee Rummings, and little Sophie Edwards.
Thank you to the providers of refreshments and entertainment- Kaidey North, Megan Tallentire, Jo Baines and crew, and Sweet Nightingale.
Thank you to all of the generous individuals and companies that kindly donated prizes for the tombola and raffle.
But the biggest thank you goes to our visitors on the day. Especially the group at the front that helped get the karaoke going and did a decent attempt of “oops upside your head” 20 seconds before the song ended. You were all so generous on the night, such good sports and wonderful people to host. Because of you all, we had an amazing, successful community event, that raised valuable funds for our residents.
On behalf of Coombe End Court, thank you all so much, and we look forward to seeing you again.
