Nothing quite says ‘I love you’ like a romantic dinner for two. And with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, there’s no time quite like the present for Ann and John Gomm to celebrate their long romance.

The pair are residents at The Orders of St John Care Trust’s (OSJCT) Townsend House, and have been married for over 30 years. They’re one of two couples at the home, and with the help of cupid’s bow, staff are going above and beyond to make it an extra special day for the happy couple.

On Wednesday, Townsend House will be lover’s paradise, with residents set revel in Valentine’s Day – there’ll be entertainers, a sumptuous valentines buffet and games to celebrate the most romantic day of the year.

The best table in the house has been reserved for Ann and John Gomm.

“Seeing Ann and John so in love really warms our hearts, and we are so happy that they chose us as their home,” Activities Coordinator, Mandy Dowling, said.

Ann and John, who are in their 80s and 90s, met later in life. Between them they have eight children (from both of their previous marriages) and met when they both worked in a factory.

“We worked in a factory called the Morris Motors,” Ann said. “John worked in the trim shop with upholstery, and I worked on the machinist. We used to have breaks together and we took it from there.”

Ann says her fondest memory together was when John (whom she affectionately refers to as my Johnnie) would take her dancing.

“John was a very good dancer and I was just learning but we used to have a lovely time together and John was always by my side.”

The best part of their story is that John is still by Ann’s side, and no doubt will be celebrating their romance this Wednesday.

When John was asked what the secret to their success is, he said: “We respect one another, trust one another and we are always there for each other.”

“A heart that loves is always young,” Anne said.
