It’s a battle no parent should ever face. Amy was overjoyed when she learned she was having a baby girl.

However, that delight turned to despair when, just hours after tiny Mia was born, the newborn passed away due to a Group B Strep (GBS) infection.

“We were totally unaware throughout the pregnancy that this could even happen. We had everything planned; her room, her clothes, and for it to be taken away in a moment is soul destroying.” Amy said. “I am so thankful for the few hours I was able to spend with my baby girl, and we will never forget her. There is no pain like losing a child.”

GBS is a bacterial infection babies can catch from their mother during childbirth or be diagnosed with in the first few months of life. According to the NHS, one in 10 babies born with a GBS infection won’t survive.

Amy hasn’t returned to work at The Orders of St John Care Trust’s (OSJCT) Goodson Lodge Care Centre in Trowbridge yet, where she’s employed as a carer for the residents, but communicates regularly with her colleagues while she recovers.

The team at Goodson Lodge was devastated by Amy’s loss, and decided they wanted to help. On 19th and 20th July, which happens to fall during Strep B Awareness month, employees, residents and friends of Goodson Lodge will be hosting a ‘pedalathon’, riding 100 miles on static bikes to raise money for charity. All funds raised will go towards Group B Strep Support (GBSS), whose goal is to eradicate group B Strep infection in babies. If you would like to donate, please visit

“This is something that is very close to my heart. Attending Mia's funeral was the hardest thing I have ever had to do, and something no parent should ever have to go through,” Goodson Lodge’s Activities Coordinator, Leanne Sims, said. “I cannot express enough how proud the team at Goodson Lodge is of Amy and her fiancé, Scot; they have been so strong. We will do everything we can to support them.”

“I am so grateful for the wonderful support of my team at Goodson Lodge and OSJCT. Together, if we can make even the smallest difference to raising awareness of group B Strep infection in babies, the effort from my colleagues will be so worth it,” Amy said.

Media is invited to attend the ‘pedalathon’. This will be over two days at two locations.
