St David's day celebrations were underway at Larkrise Care Home in Banbury today.
Delightful daffodils and red dragons spring to mind when thinking of Wales and today two of those things made a prominent appearance, bringing smiles all round at The Orders of St John Care Trust’s (OSJCT) Larkrise care home in Banbury in Oxfordshire to celebrate St David’s Day.
Residents have been taking art classes, sketching and painting beautiful bunches of daffodils whilst listening to the dulcet tones of the Welsh Choir floating gently through the home. And whilst doing this, they have been having additional fun dressing up as daffodils and (friendly) red dragons!
Traditionally, Welsh soldiers mark St David’s Day by eating raw leeks, but luckily for the residents, the chef put together a Welsh inspired menu of minted lamb to be enjoyed by all. Later in the day, residents enjoyed baking welsh cakes.
’Gwnewch y pethau bychain’ or do the little things is a national motto in Wales that came from St David and it is pertinent in the home as the team know all too well that it can be these ‘little things’, like celebrating today that can make a real difference to a resident’s day.
“I spent my formative years in South Wales and at this time every year the daffodils would bloom, and children everywhere would be picking them for their Mums ready for Mother’s Day,” Larkrise’s Head of Care, Carla Barningham, said. “When I visit my Mum, or she visits me, she always makes me Bara Brith, my favourite welsh fruit cake. We would spend most of our free time at the beach, and could be found at Barry Island playing on the 2 pence machines, and eating chips shielding them from bold seagulls!”
It was especially special for Carla to share her heritage with the residents.
“It was lovely to spend the day with our residents, sharing a little bit of Wales with them today, (trying to remember everything my Welsh teacher, Mr. Thomas, taught me!). I’m so happy they all enjoyed the daffodil hats, and our wonderful manager who dressed up as the red dragon. Everyone really got involved. It feels like home here every day, but today was extra special.”
And from all of us at The Orders of St John Care Trust, Dydd Gwyl Dewi Hapus! (Happy St. Davids Day).
