Resident Mike shares his recollection of England's historic 1966 World Cup victory and how he continues to enjoy the sport that has been a part of his life for more than 60 years.

Eighty year old Mike, was just 20 when England defeated West Germany 4-2 at Wembley to lift the World Cup. While many years have passed since that day, football remains one of his greatest passions.

Growing up in Prestwood, Mike played amateur football for his local team and spent much of his free time following the sport. Decades later, he still closely follows the game and regularly attends Arsenal matches with his son as a season ticket holder.

Reflecting on England's World Cup triumph, Mike said:

"The most memorable World Cup moment for me, and probably most people, was when England won the World Cup in 1966 – amazing. I have been a football fan since I was very young. I used to play amateur football for my local team in Prestwood; those were the days. Football has always been a big hobby and interest for me."

Although England's victory remains one of his most treasured football memories, Mike's love of the game did not stop there. Football has remained a constant throughout his life and has become something he continues to share with his family today.

Mike said:

"Football is something I grew up with and now my son shares the same passion. Arsenal forever. I regularly go to Emirates Stadium with my son to watch Arsenal play. We are season ticket holders. The atmosphere is just great, and this is what makes me happy."

For Mike, matchdays provide an opportunity to spend time with family, share experiences and continue a tradition that has connected generations through a shared love of the game.

When asked about today's players, Mike was quick to name Arsenal and England midfielder Declan Rice as his current favourite.

"Declan Rice is a great player, leader and well respected."

He also spoke fondly of former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger, whose time at the club created many memorable moments for supporters.

Mike's love of football also helps him connect with others, one of those connections is with carer Petros, who shares Mike's passion for Arsenal.

The pair regularly spend time discussing the latest results, debating players and reflecting on memorable moments from the club's history. Whether celebrating a win or analysing a disappointing result, football has become a shared interest that has helped build a strong friendship between them.

Emma Cole, Home Manager at Mulberry Court, said:

"Mike's passion for football is something everyone at the home knows about. Over time, he has built a wonderful friendship with our carer, Petros, who shares his love of Arsenal. It's lovely to see the connection they've built through a shared interest. Mike's story shows how hobbies and interests remain an important part of who we are and can help bring people together at every stage of life."

As football fans continue to celebrate the moments that have shaped the game, Mikes story is a reminder that sport can create memories that last a lifetime. From watching England lift the World Cup in 1966 to attending Arsenal matches with his son today, football remains a source of enjoyment more than 60 years later.
