Acclaimed book illustrator Korky Paul inspires Longlands residents with art workshop
Residents hear firsthand insights from renowned children's book illustrator
Renowned children's book illustrator and Oxford local Korky Paul, best known for his imaginative illustrations in the Winnie and Wilbur series, delighted residents at Longlands care home with a unique workshop on the art of illustrating children's books. The event, held at The Orders of St John Care Trust care home in Blackbird Leys, Oxford, provided an opportunity for residents to hear firsthand insights from one of the industry's most beloved artists.
Residents were transported into the whimsical world of illustration as Korky Paul shared his creative process and demonstrated sketching techniques. His storytelling and vivid imagination brought laughter and inspiration, making the session a memorable experience for all. Resident Peter Januszewski, pictured above, said: “The workshop was very good. I really enjoyed meeting the artist and hearing more about Winnie.” Care Leader Nicki Jerome added: “Korky is inspiring and it’s so lovely that he donated his time to speak with our residents. I enjoyed the dinosaur story a lot – I was wondering why I couldn’t draw one like it myself, and now I know how it’s done! It was wonderful to see the residents so engaged - today’s workshop proves that it’s never too late to embrace your inner artist.”
The visit forms part of Longlands’ commitment to fostering creativity and lifelong learning among its residents. The care home team believes in the power of art to spark conversation, improve well-being, and build connections. Earlier this year, residents from Longlands and sister care homes across the county helped decorate The Orders of St John Care Trust’s life-size ox sculpture which was on display in Oxford as part of OxTrail. The workshop concluded with a book signing session.
