Age is Nothing but a Number at Avon Court
One of our ladies at Avon Court is 100 years old this week. What an amazing achievement that must be!

One of our ladies at Avon Court is 100 years old this week. What an amazing achievement that must be! Not only do you get a message from the King, you also get be in the 0.03% of the population of this country to reach that milestone.
This got me thinking; what would someone born in 1925 have seen over the years?
In 1925, Stanley Baldwin was the prime minister and John Logie Baird gave the first ever demonstration of something called “television”.
In 1928, women over 21 were allowed to vote for the first time in the UK.
In 1939, there was a world war. Anyone born in 1925 would have only been 14 at the start of the war, so they would have most likely been evacuated out of the towns with other children to keep them safe.
In 1952, the King dies, and in 1953, a new Queen is crowned at the age of 27.
In 1962, a little-known band is formed called “The Beatles”.
In 1966, England win the football world cup.
In 1971, decimalised currency replaces pounds, shillings and pence.
In 1979, we had the first female prime minister.
In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee invents the World Wide Web, and some wonder if it will ever catch on.
In 1996, Dolly the Sheep is born, the first cloned mammal, sparking debate about genetic engineering.
In 2015, Avonbourne Care Centre is opened.
There are too many events in the past 100 years to mention, but imagine how it must have felt to have been there when some of these amazing events happened.
Can you think of any events that are significant to you that you remember that I haven’t included?
Wishing our resident at Avon Court a very happy and special 100th birthday!
Until next time, Les
