Apple Trees residents explore the 'Wonderwall' in their new Oasis room
Team at Apple Trees Care Centre open a new sensory room.
A new sensory room has opened for residents, including many with dementia, at Apple Trees care home in Grantham, run by The Orders of St John Care Trust.
This new space features a touch and feel ‘wonderwall’, fidget toys, light displays and soothing music such as rain forest and sea sounds. In time the home hope to introduce more dementia friendly elements including a ball pool.
The room was the idea of Deputy Care Leader Marie Young, who created the room with help from staff at the home as a tranquil but entertaining place for residents.
Marie said: “We’ve been looking for creative ways to offer our residents more variety within the home, and we recognise that some need some quiet space. We would usually have entertainers visiting the home, and day trips out, but this isn’t possible for now, so we set about creating this room.
“One of our residents cried, the first time that she came to the room. She said it was beautiful.”
