Ashwood steps up for Falls Prevention Awareness Week

Residents and colleagues at OSJCT Ashwood in Warminster are marking Falls Prevention Awareness Week, highlighting the important steps that can help older people stay active, confident and safe.

Falls can become more common as we get older, but there are many ways to help reduce the risk. Throughout the week, the Ashwood team is showcasing how colleagues work together to support residents through appropriate activities, individual risk assessments, good hydration and attentive care.

This week, residents have been taking part in activities focused on exercise, balance and coordination, helping to maintain strength and mobility while also providing an enjoyable opportunity to get moving together.

Hydration has also been an important part of the activities. Encouraging residents to drink regularly supports their overall health and wellbeing and can play an important role in helping people remain alert and steady on their feet.

Behind the activities, colleagues at Ashwood take an individual approach to falls prevention. Risk assessments help identify where additional support may be needed, while trained team members work together to provide a safe and supportive environment.

Pauline Colman-Holland, Home Manager at Ashwood, said:

Falls prevention is something we think about every day at Ashwood, but this week gives us a great opportunity to raise awareness and show how many different things can help. From keeping active and maintaining strength and balance to staying hydrated and understanding each resident’s individual needs, it really is a team effort.

We want our residents to feel safe, but just as importantly, we want them to feel confident and supported to remain as independent and active as possible.

Falls prevention isn't simply about preventing someone from falling. It's also about supporting residents to maintain their mobility, confidence and independence, enabling them to continue doing the things they enjoy.

Falls Prevention Awareness Week is a great opportunity for everyone at Ashwood to get moving, stay hydrated and raise awareness of the everyday actions that can make a real difference to residents' wellbeing.
