The trip gave residents the opportunity to discover the story of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, exploring displays, uniforms and exhibits charting its military history.

For one Athelstan House resident, who served as a Captain, the visit was particularly meaningful. Seeing the uniform he once wore brought back many memories from his time in service, some happy and others more emotional.

He was able to share some of his experiences and reflections with those around him, making the visit especially poignant. It was a privilege for residents and colleagues to listen to his memories and share the moment with him.

This was such a special visit for everyone, but seeing the memories it brought back for one of our residents made the afternoon particularly meaningful. Our residents have lived such rich and varied lives, and opportunities like this allow us to learn more about their experiences and the stories that have shaped them. We feel incredibly privileged when residents choose to share those memories with us.

Visits like this can also have a positive impact on residents’ mental health and overall wellbeing. Getting out into the community, experiencing a change of surroundings and discovering somewhere interesting can provide stimulation, encourage conversation and strengthen social connections. For older people, revisiting familiar periods of history can also provide opportunities for reminiscence, helping to reinforce a sense of identity, purpose and connection with their own life stories.

The afternoon was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone, with residents finding the museum fascinating, moving and full of interesting exhibits.

Days out such as this are an important part of life at Athelstan House. As well as providing an opportunity to explore new places and enjoy time together, visits can reconnect residents with their own histories, interests and experiences. Familiar objects, places and stories can prompt memories and conversations, helping residents share important parts of their lives with others.

It was a wonderful afternoon filled with history, reflection and companionship and a memorable day out for everyone at Athelstan House.
