Avon Court Unleashes Joy With Animal Therapy Visits for Residents
Regular visits from Bob and his dog, Moss, are a highlight for many residents.
At Avon Court, we’re always looking for innovative approaches to enhance the wellbeing of our residents. One such initiative that has captured hearts and uplifted spirits is our visits from Bob and his faithful dog, Moss, our Pets As Therapy (PAT) team. The programme can have profound benefits as it reinforces the enduring bond shared between humans and their furry friends.
March is the anniversary of Bob and Moss coming to Avonbourne. Moss is a 12 year old spaniel, who was a working dog before coming to live with Bob. They come in twice a week and Bob tells us that the visits are a highlight for them too. “Moss absolutely loves coming here. When I put his jacket on every Tuesday and Friday, he gets so excited, he runs through the front door.”
Here are just some of the benefits of welcoming animals into the home to spend time with residents:
Emotional Wellbeing
The presence of animals, such as lovely Moss, has a remarkable effect on the emotional wellbeing of our residents. Interacting with Moss brings feelings of joy and companionship for residents, and for those who previously had dogs themselves, there is a chance for reminiscing over their pets and sharing their stories of dogs, or any other pets, they’ve loved in the past.
Promote Relaxation
Studies have shown that spending time with animals can promote relaxation. The simple act of stroking or cuddling a gentle companion like Moss can have a calming effect on the mind and body, helping our residents to relax. Residents look forward to the regular visits from Bob and Moss, and we’ve found that they have such a positive impact for everyone here.
Social Engagement
Animal therapy encourages social interaction and we all look forward our visits from Bob and Moss; any excuse to talk about our own pets, and to build new memories through playful interactions with Moss. Bob and Moss are always great catalysts for conversation and laughter.
Sense of Purpose
And it’s not just our residents that benefit from our Pets As Therapy visits! For Bob and Moss, it’s an opportunity to share some joy, and we hope their visits foster a deep sense of fulfilment for them both. Through their compassion, Bob and Moss exemplify the transformative power of animal therapy in nurturing the human spirit.
Friends and family are always welcome at Avon Court, and if you would like to coincide your next visit with a chance to meet Bob and Moss, get in touch and we’ll let you know when they’ll be with us next.
