Avonbourne Flowers for Care Home Open Week
Residents and members of the local community have been busy upcycling and recycling to make beautiful flowers for an art installation in the garden.
The activities team at Avonbourne had planned an art gallery display last year, which sadly had to be cancelled. With some restrictions still in place, the team felt it best to create something that could be appreciated from outside, that would add some colour and could get the local community involved. The flower project was born!
Over the last few weeks, Avonbourne residents and members of the local community have been letting their imaginations run wild, creating some original floral art, and we’ve been very impressed with the creativity we’ve seen. Now, for Care Home Open Week, our display is ready!
The staff have found that having community involvement in this sort of creative project is a very rewarding experience for all involved. We’ve loved meeting people as they’ve brought their flowers to Avonbourne, especially children from the local nurseries and pre-schools.
Art has a unique way of bringing people together and we hope that anyone passing through our car park will be able to share the same joy we do when we see the flowers and think of everything they represent; creativity, colour, vibrancy, unity, and perhaps most importantly over the last year or so, community and inclusion. Togetherness.
Creating art, especially in difficult times, is known to help improve mental health and relaxation, and we hope this has helped to inspire those who made a flower to continue making beautiful things. It’s the process that is every bit as important as the end result. We hope that by having several generations working towards the same goal we’ve been able to bring people closer together and foster a sense of belonging in our community.
Care Home Open Week runs from 28th June – 4th July and the flowers will be in place for some time afterwards if you are passing and would like to see them.
