Avonbourne's January Round-up
Residents of Avon Court and Bourne House have had a busy start to 2022.
Our residents and team at Avonbourne Care Centre didn’t so much make new year’s resolutions, rather a commitment to try lots of new things in 2022, as well as making time for all our favourite pastimes.
Stonehenge
We spent some time learning a little local history with a virtual tour of the world-famous site just up the road from our home. We built a replica model of the stones and coloured some pictures for our gallery wall, and keen bakers as many of our residents are, we made some cakes – rock cakes, of course!
Fun and games
We had a lovely morning playing “Play Your Cards Right.” The residents formed two teams to play for chocolate prizes. With the theme tune playing in the background, the atmosphere was great, and everyone had a lot of fun. It turns out there are a lot of the good old game shows they ought to bring back.
The Castle
This January we were excited to open up Avonbourne’s very own pub, named “The Castle,” in recognition of our location at Old Sarum. You can read more about it in last month’s blog post. It’s providing a fun new way to socialise. Malick runs the pub every weekend and we have a selection of wines and beers for the residents to enjoy. A huge thank you to Wadworth Brewery for donating accessories to make our pub look truly authentic.
Theme days
We LOVE a national/international theme day and try to celebrate as many as we can. We got involved in several in January:
Chinese New Year – we decorated Chinese hats and lanterns and enjoyed eating some Chinese foods.
Burns Night – we had lots of fun making and trying on a kilt. We watched the Edinburgh Military Tattoo on Youtube and decorated and ate shortbread dipped in chocolate. Our saltire bunting helped set the scene.
Australia Day – it was a Day at the Races for us as we held our own Melbourne Cup. Residents were divided into teams and we placed our bets. While watching the races we enjoyed eating traditional Australian Fairy Bread which everyone enjoyed.
Thank you
The activities team were delighted to be presented with certificates as part of National Activities Professionals Week but residents Gwen and Peggy.
You can see more on these stories and more on our Facebook page. February has already been very busy and there’s still plenty of time left. We're hoping to make 2022 a year to remember.
