“Being able to play a small role in enhancing the quality of life for seniors is a truly rewarding experience.”
Catching up with Beata, one of the Activities Coordinators at Windsor Street Care Centre, Cheltenham, for National Activity Providers and Professionals Week 2023.
Last year Beata joined the team of Activities Coordinators at Windsor Street Care Centre in Cheltenham, having worked in the same role at Monkscroft Care Centre, since November 2019.
“I am incredibly proud to be an Activities Coordinator for our residents. Being able to play a small role in enhancing the quality of life for seniors is a truly rewarding experience. Seeing their faces light up when they participate in an activity they enjoy or make a new friend around the home is truly heart-warming,” said Beata.
The role of Activities Coordinator is extremely important across all OSJCT care homes. They play a vital role in providing socialisation and stimulation in the form of activity schedules that are tailored to each individual resident.
Reflecting on the importance of her role, Beata said: “As an Activities Coordinator I am a professional who plans, organises, and leads various recreational and leisure activities for residents. These activities are designed to improve the physical, mental, and emotional well-being, to provide stimulating and engaging activities that are meaningful and purposeful. Here at Windsor Street Care Centre, we offer person-centred activities to meet our residents needs and interest.”
Another key part of Beata’s role is the connection she creates between residents and the local community. She said: “Staying connected to the community is important for various reasons. For one, it allows individuals to feel a sense of belonging and can increase their overall wellbeing. Additionally, being connected to the community allows residents to stay informed about local events, issues, and opportunities, which can help them make more informed decisions about their lives. Moving to the care home doesn’t mean that residents can’t enjoy community linked benefits.”
Finally, when asked about a memory that comes to mind during her time working as an Activities Coordinator, it was a recent memory that came to mind for Beata.
“A few weeks ago, we had a visit from a PAT dog, Nettle, and her owner. Whilst visiting residents in their rooms, Nettle walked over to one resident who was resting in bed at the time. Nettle placed her head next to the resident whilst wagging her tail and looking up to her with friendly eyes. This particular resident has always loved dogs. It was a special moment to see the smile on her face during her time with Nettle.”
