Residents at Bemerton Lodge Care Home in Salisbury celebrated Black History Month with a fascinating day of learning, reflection and creativity, exploring the achievements of inspirational Black figures who have helped shape history.
As part of the home's Black History Month activities, residents spent the morning discovering the stories of influential individuals, learning about their remarkable achievements and the lasting contributions they have made to society.
The day focused on the extraordinary life of Katherine Johnson, the pioneering African American mathematician whose groundbreaking work at NASA helped make some of America's most significant space missions possible.
Residents enjoyed watching clips from the award-winning film Hidden Figures, which tells the inspiring story of Johnson and her colleagues, highlighting the racial and gender discrimination they faced while working in the American space programme during the 1960s.
The morning provided an opportunity for residents to reflect on the challenges Johnson overcame, the importance of equality and perseverance, and how her remarkable mathematical abilities helped change the course of space exploration.
Inspired by her achievements, residents then spent the afternoon putting their own creativity to the test, designing and making colourful rockets. The hands-on activity brought plenty of imagination, conversation and enjoyment, providing a fun way to connect the morning's learning with an engaging creative experience.
Celebrating Diversity, Equality and Achievement
Black History Month, celebrated throughout October in the UK, provides an important opportunity to recognise and celebrate the achievements, contributions and experiences of Black people throughout history and in society today.
At Bemerton Lodge, recognising important cultural events forms part of the home's commitment to creating an inclusive, welcoming and stimulating environment where residents can continue learning, exploring new interests and sharing their own experiences.
Rebecca Kilgour, Home Manager at Bemerton Lodge, commented:
Black History Month is a wonderful opportunity for our residents and colleagues to come together, learn something new and celebrate the incredible achievements of people who have helped shape our world.
Katherine Johnson's story is particularly inspiring because it demonstrates the importance of determination, equality and believing in your abilities, even when faced with significant barriers. Our residents really enjoyed discovering her story, and it was lovely to see that inspiration carried through into the afternoon's rocket-making activities.
The Importance of Lifelong Learning in Care Homes
Activities that combine history, education and creativity play an important role in supporting residents' wellbeing and quality of life.
Exploring significant historical events and inspirational figures encourages curiosity, stimulates memory and creates opportunities for meaningful conversation. For many older people, reflecting on events that took place during their lifetime can also encourage reminiscence, helping residents connect personal experiences with wider social and cultural changes.
Creative activities, such as designing and making rockets, provide additional opportunities to develop fine motor skills, express individuality and enjoy a sense of achievement.
By celebrating occasions such as Black History Month, Bemerton Lodge continues to promote diversity, inclusion and lifelong learning, ensuring that residents have opportunities to discover new stories, celebrate different cultures and enjoy engaging experiences together.
From learning about the remarkable achievements of a NASA pioneer to creating their very own rockets, it was a day that proved inspiration, imagination and the joy of discovery have no age limit.
