Bemerton Lodge residents enjoy new Magic Table thanks to community support for fundraising drive

Residents at OSJCT Bemerton Lodge had an exciting start to their year, as they used their new, innovative Magic Table, for the first time, to play archery, ten pin bowling, dance and try out Zumba, and to watch firework displays and ocean scenes. They also completed crosswords and jigsaw puzzles on the new Magic Table.
Residents, team members and supporters at the Salisbury care home, succeeded in raising £5,000 to buy a Magic Table for the home after a two-year fundraising campaign, supported by the local community. Fundraising events included a car wash, a popular summer fete and raffle, bake sales and a 500-mile cycle challenge on a static bike in the care home’s entrance hall.
The new Magic Table is a digital touch-screen device which allows users to play interactive games, both individually and as part of a group. This innovative product encourages social and physical stimulation with specific benefits for those with a diagnosis of dementia.
Rebecca Flood, Home Manager, said: "Everyone pulled together to raise the money. Local businesses have been very generous with prizes and residents invited their friends, family members and the community to our events. The Magic table brings so much happiness and laughter into our home.
“Residents are thoroughly enjoying using it and finding out what they can do. It’s accessible for everyone, such as one gentleman, who had difficulties with his communication, who found new confidence, thanks to the Magic Table, when sharing directions for a puzzle game with fellow residents.
“We invite relatives and friends who visit residents to try it. I hope they enjoy it as much as we do.”
Annabel, a resident at Bemerton Lodge, said: “I never thought I would be playing ten pin bowling again. This home amazes me with the ideas and things they work so hard for to make our lives even more fun.”
Josie, also a resident, said: “It’s well worth having a go, its magic!”
