Celebrating our resident volunteers this Volunteers’ Week, a blog by Volunteer Manager Anita Rudd
Muriel and Joyce, resident Volunteers at Whitefriares
We’re privileged at OSJCT to have hundreds of talented volunteers that share their interests and skills with our residents. This Volunteers’ Week we’re saying a huge thank you to each and every one of them.
And no Volunteers’ Week celebration is complete without also recognising those residents that also give their time to volunteer in our homes. You’ve may have read previous blogs about our volunteer team at Whitefriars, in Stamford, Lincolnshire, who spend their spare time volunteering by doing a variety of activities within the home based on their interests and sometimes former careers.
On my recent visit to Whitefriars, I was greeted by two of our Volunteer Welcomers, and lifelong friends, Joyce and Muriel.
I was instantly impressed with their efficiency, greeting those that arrived at the home with huge smiles, and ensuring that all visitors washed their hands, signed in and of course were wearing their visitors’ badge. They show visitors where they need to go and answer any questions that they have. Sometimes if you are lucky, they will give you a chocolate! The ladies, certainly put the hours in and are on duty from 10-30 until 4.30, seven days a week.
It was an absolute joy to spend time with Joyce and Muriel, and learn more about the story of their friendship. They first worked together when they were 15 years old and later spent some time living next door to each other. Through the years they have come back together at various stages of life, with their friendship reignited when they both became residents at Whitefriars.
The ladies take real pride in their volunteer role and told me that they feel it has given them a whole new lease of life, as they have the opportunity to meet lots of different people. Residents and other visitors to the home clearly love having them on reception, one person told me that they look forward to seeing their smiley faces each time they visit.
Shelly, Whitefriars Homes Manager, said “Like all our resident volunteers, Joyce and Muriel have made such a difference in their volunteer roles. Their help has especially made a difference at weekends when the office team are not working. We wouldn’t be without them.”
Happy Volunteers’ Week Joyce and Muriel, and to all our resident volunteers across OSJCT.
