Couple celebrate 60th wedding anniversary at Apple Trees
Ian and Elspeth Young, celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary last week at the Apple Trees care home in Grantham, where they have lived since summer 2020.
Ian and Elspeth celebrated their anniversary with a special anniversary lunch of steak and chips followed by a party buffet in the evening, organised by the team at Apple Trees. They also received a card and congratulations from the Queen, as well as best wishes from family and friends, and a beautiful wedding cake handmade by the kitchen team.
Ian is 90 years old, and Elspeth is 85. They met at Glasgow University and married at Tullibody Church in Scotland, before going on to have two sons. Their family now includes three granddaughters.
Both are now retired; Ian was a vet and Elspeth a science teacher. They moved home several times earlier their married life, and have lived in Thornbury, Wrexham, Framlingham and Nettleham in Lincoln.
The couple moved into the care home together in June 2020, as they needed help looking after each other.
Ian and Elspeth share two rooms, one for sleeping and one as a living room area where they display art which Ian has painted. A separate room in the care home has been turned into an art studio where they can both indulge their love of painting.
Everyone involved in organising the special day was thrilled by the joy on the couples faces during the celebrations.
Julie McGrath, Activities Co-ordinator at Apple Trees, who knows the couple well said: “Ian and Elspeth are a joy to have in the home. Ian is a keen painter and has been very generous displaying some of his pictures across the home. They are often walking together in our gardens and it’s wonderful to see their care and affection for each other.”
Ian said of his Elspeth, “After all this time she is still the woman I married and my best friend.”
