The Dementia Journey, the less common types of Dementia
The Orders of St John Care Trust (OSJCT) specialists in dementia care held a virtual event to provide carers with support and advice on the less common types of Dementia.
Our Admiral Nurses (specialist dementia nurses) talked about the less common types of Dementia and their signs and symptoms. The Admiral Nurses looked at Dementia with Lewy Bodies, Young Onset Dementia and Frontotemporal Dementia.
In previous virtual support sessions that have been run by OSJCT Admiral Nurses they have looked at the more common types of Dementia including Alzheimers and Vascular Dementia and have always found a common theme; families were asking for support for themselves and their loved ones.
The virtual event was well attended by families who are caring for a loved one at home and also by local professionals. Many of the local professionals who attended left their details for families to reach out to them to use their free services or gain further local support.
Admiral Nurses are registered nurses who specialise in dementia care and work collaboratively with families and care providers, sharing their expertise and giving them the support and skills needed.
The session was followed with a Q&A session providing carers with an opportunity to ask the Admiral Nurses any individual questions and signpost family members to community support.
Angie Williams, Lead Admiral Nurse said, “We are overwhelmed with positive feedback we have had from these support sessions. These sessions give us an opportunity to speak to the loved ones of those living with dementia and provide them with tailored support in the form of practical advice and a greater understanding of the different types of dementia.”
