Residents across a number of our homes including Edwardstow Court, Wellford Gardens, Grace Care Centre, The Lakes Care Centre and Goodson Lodge are set to benefit from improved hearing health following specialist ear care training delivered to colleagues through a new partnership with Tympa Health
The training equips staff with the skills to carry out comprehensive ear health assessments and safely remove earwax within the home. This helps reduce discomfort, prevent untreated issues, and significantly enhance residents’ quality of life.
Hearing loss is common among older people and can have a profound impact on daily living. Even simple issues such as wax build‑up can significantly reduce hearing, leading to communication difficulties, social withdrawal, and, in some cases, behaviours that may be mistaken for cognitive decline. By developing the skills to identify and manage these issues promptly, teams can support residents to remain engaged, connected, and confident in their day‑to‑day interactions.
Bringing ear care in‑house removes the need for residents to travel to external clinics or face long waits for routine treatment—experiences that can be particularly challenging for individuals living with dementia. Instead, care is delivered in the familiar and reassuring environment of the home, allowing concerns to be addressed more quickly and comfortably.
Louise Axtell, Divisional Director, shared the positive impact she expects the training to have:
“Better hearing can transform a resident’s experience of daily life—from taking part in conversations to enjoying activities they love. With Tympa training, we can offer safe, effective ear care within the home, reducing anxiety and ensuring residents receive timely support. It’s a meaningful step forward in promoting comfort, dignity, and enhanced wellbeing.”
This investment reflects OSJCT’s continued commitment to strengthening health and wellbeing support for residents. By equipping teams with specialist skills, the Trust continues to deliver high‑quality, person‑centred care that meets individual needs and improves quality of life.
