This Falls Prevention Awareness Week, the team at Edwardstow has been getting active with a simple but important message: Let’s Get Physical!

Falls can happen to anyone, but as we get older, maintaining strength, balance and mobility can play an important role in helping people stay active, independent and confident in their everyday lives.

At Edwardstow, residents have been taking part in a range of fun, accessible activities designed to encourage movement and support physical wellbeing. From gentle exercises and stretches to walking and movement sessions, there have been plenty of opportunities for everyone to get involved at their own pace.

Home Manager, Matthew Peach said:

Falls prevention is incredibly important because a fall can have a significant impact on someone’s confidence, independence and quality of life, as well as potentially causing serious injury. That’s why we focus on prevention and encourage our residents to stay as active as possible. Building strength, maintaining balance and keeping mobile can all help people feel more confident in their everyday lives. Just as importantly, our activities are about having fun, connecting with others and helping our residents enjoy being active in a safe and supportive environment.

Living at an OSJCT home means residents can enjoy the reassurance of having support available to help them remain mobile and confident in their everyday lives. At Edwardstow, individual mobility needs are understood and supported, helping residents feel safe while encouraging them to remain as independent and active as possible.

There are weekly activities designed to get residents moving, from gentle exercise and stretching to activities that encourage balance, coordination and mobility. Residents also have regular access to the gym within the home, providing another opportunity to work on strength and movement in a comfortable, familiar and supportive environment.

For residents, staying active is not simply about falls prevention, it is about maintaining independence, building confidence and continuing to enjoy the things they love, with the right support around them.

Moving more, feeling stronger with regular physical activity can help support muscle strength, flexibility, coordination and balance, all important factors when it comes to reducing the risk of falls.

The Edwardstow team also recognises that staying active is about much more than physical health. Group activities provide opportunities for residents to socialise, have fun and enjoy a sense of achievement together.

Whether it’s joining an exercise session, taking a stroll around the home, enjoying some music and movement, or spending time in the gym, every movement counts.

Falls Prevention Awareness Week is also an opportunity to highlight some of the practical steps that can help people remain safe and confident. At Edwardstow, residents are supported to stay as active as possible while staff remain mindful of individual mobility needs and abilities. Personalised support, suitable footwear, safe surroundings and regular opportunities to move all form part of a wider approach to falls prevention.

Most importantly, residents are encouraged to take part in activities that are right for them.

This Falls Prevention Awareness Week, Edwardstow is celebrating movement in all its forms, because staying active is not about how far, how fast or how much. It’s about moving more, building confidence and enjoying life.
