Football scores big for Langford View’s minibus fund
5-a-side tournament hosted by Launton Ladies FC helps raise funds towards minibus purchase
Forty-two women’s football teams from across Oxfordshire took part in a 5-a-side tournament hosted by Launton Ladies FC to help raise funds towards purchasing a minibus for Langford View in Bicester.
The tournament, part of an ongoing partnership between Launton Ladies FC and Langford View, not only helped raise funds, but also highlighted the role of sport in fostering inclusion and promoting wellbeing. By bringing care home residents, players and supporters of all ages together, the event promoted intergenerational connections, physical activity and community engagement. It also offered residents the chance to enjoy a lively social occasion.
Langford View resident Peggy said: “What a great day! I really enjoyed watching the matches and treating myself to a burger from the BBQ and an ice cream. It brought back lovely memories of similar events I used to go to back in the States. I had such fun cheering on the Launton team!”
In addition to the five matches they played on the day, the Launton Ladies also helped to run a fundraising stall offering cakes and a raffle, with items donated by supporters, local business and the Club.
Farida Ait-Tales, Home Manager at Langford View, awarded the winners and runners-up trophies. She said: “It was a fantastic day for Langford View to be involved in. The support we received in raising money for our minibus fund was truly appreciated — with a special thank you to the Launton Ladies for all their amazing efforts and help throughout the day. It was also wonderful to be part of an event that brought together so many communities, all proudly represented by their teams.”
Claire Finn, Coach of Launton Ladies FC, added: “We were pleased to welcome OSJCT to our dedicated ladies 5-a-side football tournament, showcasing a celebration of women’s football, with 42 teams taking part across the day! It was a fun, sunny (and a bit windy) day, where football was the winner! I think all of the residents enjoyed their ice creams and we were proud to have OSJCT with us for the day to support their fundraising raffle. This is an annual event for Launton Ladies FC — a really collaborative and supportive effort between the football club and OSJCT to make it a success for both!”
Football legend and former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher also made a special appearance, officiating several matches and speaking with OSJCT residents and their carers about life at Langford View.
The day culminated in a thrilling final match between Barton United FC (Oxford) and New Bradwell St. Peter FC (Milton Keynes), with New Bradwell clinching the title on penalties.
Funds raised will contribute to the care home’s goal of purchasing a minibus to further support resident outings and community involvement.
