Residents and staff at Fremantle Court Care Home came together for a “Walk for Autism” event, stepping out in support of World Autism Day and in celebration of one staff member’s personal journey with autism.

The initiative was led by Maria, a valued member of the Fremantle Court team, who has spoken openly and proudly about her autism since her diagnosis in 2022. Maria describes her diagnosis as a turning point in her life, explaining that it brought a profound sense of relief as she finally began to understand herself more clearly.

The homes Walk for Autism saw colleagues walking together in a show of unity, understanding, and support. For Maria, seeing her colleagues engage so wholeheartedly in the initiative was particularly meaningful.

To mark the occasion, Maria created personalised lanyards, badges, and certificates for everyone who took part, reflecting her pride in championing autism awareness and her commitment to fostering understanding within the home.

Beyond the event, Maria has also taken on an active role in supporting staff learning and development around autism, helping to build awareness across the team. She has completed the Autism Success Formula programme — a two-year development course supported by The Orders of St John Care Trust — designed to help individuals better understand autism, build resilience, and develop practical strategies for everyday life and work.

Staff member, Maria said

“Having the support of my colleagues meant the world to me. Being diagnosed in 2022 was a sense of relief for me and being able to work in a place where I am supported and embraced by my colleagues is so meaningful”

“This was a special moment for the home. Maria has shown incredible openness in sharing her story, and her passion for raising awareness has had a real impact on the team. Events like the Autism Walk bring staff together, but they also help us learn from one another and build a more inclusive culture where everyone feels valued and understood.”
