After two weeks, six countries and 2,600 miles on his beloved Vespa, Head Housekeeper Rui Baptista has returned to Fremantle Court care home in Stoke Mandeville, with memories of a lifetime and plenty of stories to share with residents and colleagues.

The remarkable journey saw Rui - Head of Housekeeping ride from Aylesbury to Rome to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the iconic Vespa, turning a lifelong passion for the classic scooter into the adventure of a lifetime.

Travelling across Europe, Rui spent two weeks navigating winding mountain roads, picturesque villages and bustling cities before reaching the Italian capital, the birthplace of the world-famous scooter. Covering hundreds of miles each day, the journey was both physically demanding and deeply rewarding, testing his resilience while allowing him to experience some of Europe's most spectacular landscapes.

"It has always been something I wanted to do," said Rui. "The Vespa is iconic and celebrating its 80th anniversary by riding all the way to Rome felt like the perfect way to mark such a special milestone. There were long days on the road, but every mile was worth it. Arriving in Rome was an incredible feeling and something I'll never forget. I'm so pleased to be able to come back and share the experience with everyone here."

Since returning to Fremantle Court, Rui's adventure has become one of the biggest talking points in the home. Residents have enjoyed looking through his photographs, hearing about the places he visited and reminiscing about their own travels, holidays and memories of Vespas over the years.
