Residents at Fremantle Court Care Home stepped back in time as the home marked VE Day with an emotional celebration honouring the extraordinary experiences of three residents who served during the Second World War.

The event brought together residents, families, and team members for a day of remembrance, reflection, and celebration, with special recognition given to residents Gwen, Rachel, and Gordon for their contributions during the war effort.

Beloved resident Gwen who has lived in the homes for 6 years served as a radio operator, while beloved resident Rachel who has lived in the home for over 5 years worked in the Land Army supporting Britain’s food production efforts, and Gordon a longstanding resident for over 3 years trained servicemen as a flight simulation instructor, teaching veterans how to fly aircraft during wartime.

As memories of VE Day were shared residents spoke candidly about their experiences, recalling the realities of service, sacrifice, and community spirit during one of the most defining periods in modern history.

To thank them for their courage and dedication, each resident was presented with flowers and chocolates by the staff.

The commemorations continued with a traditional high tea, featuring homemade sandwiches, freshly baked scones, and nostalgic music, as residents reflected together on memories from years gone by.

For Fremantle Court, the celebration was about far more than marking a historic anniversary. The event formed part of the home’s wider commitment to understanding residents through their individual life stories, an approach central to care across The Orders of St John Care Trust (OSJCT).

Life Story work helps our care teams build a deeper understanding of a resident’s background, experiences, relationships, interests, and personal identity, ensuring care is shaped around the individual. OSJCT describes Life Story work as a way of helping residents maintain their sense of identity, while enabling care teams to provide more meaningful and personalised support.

Deepthi Jose, Home Manager said:
“Days like VE Day remind us just how extraordinary the people living in our homes truly are. Taking the time to understand someone’s life story allows us to uncover incredible experiences and achievements that may otherwise never be known. These stories help shape the way we care for residents every day, ensuring support is personal, meaningful, and grounded in who they are as individuals.”

OSJCT’s Life Story approach is particularly important for residents living with dementia, helping teams understand the experiences, routines, and memories that continue to shape a person’s identity and wellbeing.

The VE Day celebration at Fremantle Court not only paid tribute to an important moment in history but also celebrated the remarkable lives and lasting legacies of the residents who lived through it.
