Residents and team members at Goodson Lodge Care Centre in Trowbridge embraced the spirit of Oktoberfest with a celebration of traditional Bavarian culture, food and music, bringing a taste of Germany to the heart of the care home.
The home was filled with festive cheer as residents and colleagues came together to enjoy an Oktoberfest-inspired celebration, exploring the rich traditions of one of Germany's most famous cultural festivals.
From traditional Bavarian food to lively music, the event offered residents an opportunity to experience a different culture, share memories and enjoy a wonderful sense of togetherness.
Oktoberfest is one of the world's largest and most famous cultural festivals, originating in Munich, Germany, in 1810 to celebrate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese. More than 200 years later, the festival continues to attract millions of visitors each year, celebrating Bavarian heritage through traditional music, dancing, regional cuisine, colourful costumes and a welcoming atmosphere.
Although best known for its lively beer tents, Oktoberfest is also a celebration of friendship, hospitality and togetherness, bringing people of all generations together to enjoy traditional customs and create lasting memories.
At Goodson Lodge, the celebration brought these traditions to life, creating opportunities for residents to reminisce about holidays abroad, discover new cultural experiences and enjoy an afternoon of entertainment and friendship.
Rebecca Pike, Home Manager at Goodson Lodge, said:
At Goodson Lodge, we're always looking for new and exciting ways to bring different experiences into our home. Oktoberfest was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate another culture, enjoy some traditional food and music, and most importantly, bring everyone together. Events like this create such a lovely atmosphere, encouraging conversation, laughter and shared experiences. It's about making every day meaningful and ensuring our residents continue to enjoy the celebrations and traditions that make life so special.
Celebrating cultural events such as Oktoberfest in care homes offers far more than an afternoon of entertainment. These occasions provide valuable opportunities to support residents' emotional, social and physical wellbeing, encouraging conversation, laughter and meaningful connections.
Traditional music, food and cultural experiences can stimulate the senses, evoke memories of past holidays and celebrations, and encourage residents to explore different traditions. For those living with dementia, familiar sounds, tastes and shared experiences can be particularly beneficial in promoting reminiscence, positive engagement and a sense of belonging.
Events like Oktoberfest also bring residents and care teams together in a relaxed and enjoyable setting, strengthening relationships, boosting staff morale and creating a shared sense of community. Taking part in celebrations outside of everyday routines allows colleagues to connect with residents on a more personal level, helping to build trust, understanding and friendships.
At Goodson Lodge, activities and cultural celebrations are an important part of everyday life, reflecting The Orders of St John Care Trust's commitment to person-centred care and creating a welcoming, vibrant community where everyone feels included, valued and connected.
The Oktoberfest celebration was another wonderful example of how Goodson Lodge brings people together through creativity, culture and shared experiences, proving that you don't need to travel to Bavaria to enjoy a little Oktoberfest magic!
Prost! Here's to friendship, fun and celebrating life at Goodson Lodge!
