Residents at Goodson Lodge Care Centre in Trowbridge have been taking a nostalgic trip down memory lane thanks to a wonderful Borrow Box, kindly loaned by The Royal Mint Museum.
The fascinating collection of historic coins provided residents with a unique opportunity to explore Britain's monetary history while reminiscing about days gone by, sparking conversations, laughter and treasured memories.
From remembering the days of pounds, shillings and pence to sharing stories of childhood pocket money, shopping trips and the changing cost of everyday essentials, the activity encouraged residents to reflect on their own experiences and the many changes they have witnessed throughout their lives.
The session proved to be a wonderful conversation starter, with residents sharing personal stories and memories connected to familiar coins from their younger years.
Rebecca Pike, Home Manager at Goodson Lodge, said:
It was lovely to see how something as simple as an old coin could bring back so many wonderful memories for our residents. The Borrow Box encouraged some fantastic conversations, with everyone sharing stories about their childhoods, families and experiences. We're incredibly grateful to The Royal Mint Museum for giving us this opportunity to bring a little piece of history into our home.
The Importance of Reminiscence in Care Homes
Reminiscence activities play an important role in supporting the emotional and social wellbeing of older people, particularly those living with dementia. Familiar objects, photographs and historical artefacts can help stimulate memories, encourage communication and provide opportunities for meaningful connections.
Activities such as these also help residents celebrate their personal histories, share their knowledge with others and maintain a sense of identity and belonging. By creating opportunities to revisit familiar experiences, care homes can support positive wellbeing while bringing residents and team members closer together.
Goodson Lodge is committed to providing engaging and meaningful activities that celebrate residents' life experiences, encourage curiosity and create opportunities for connection.
A huge thank you to The Royal Mint Museum for generously lending the Borrow Box and helping to create such a memorable experience for everyone at Goodson Lodge. It was a wonderful reminder that sometimes the smallest objects can unlock the biggest memories.
