A fascinating collection of historic coins sparked memories, conversation and plenty of curiosity at Wellford Gardens when residents welcomed a special guest from the Oxford Numismatic Society.
David, from the Oxford Numismatic Society, visited the home with an impressive selection of coins spanning different periods of history, giving residents the chance to discover the remarkable stories behind the money people once carried in their pockets.
Bringing each piece to life, David explained the history and significance of the coins, while residents were able to take a closer look, ask questions and share their own memories of coins and currency from years gone by.
The display proved to be a wonderful conversation starter, with residents reminiscing about the money they remembered using and exchanging stories and experiences from their own lives.
Rachel Joyce, Home Manager at Wellford Gardens, said:
It was wonderful to welcome David to Wellford Gardens and see how much our residents enjoyed the afternoon. The coins sparked so many interesting conversations and memories, and David really brought their history to life.
We’re always looking for opportunities to bring new experiences into the home that encourage curiosity, learning and reminiscence, and this was a fantastic example of that.
Activities like this play an important role in supporting residents’ wellbeing. Exploring familiar objects from the past can stimulate memories, encourage storytelling and give residents opportunities to share their own knowledge and life experiences. Discovering something new also keeps the mind active and engaged, while enjoying an experience together encourages social interaction, connection and a sense of belonging.
Welcoming visiting speakers and community groups into Wellford Gardens also helps residents maintain meaningful links with the wider community, bringing new people, interests and experiences into everyday life at the home.
A huge thank you to David and the Oxford Numismatic Society for giving their time, sharing their knowledge and making the visit such an interesting and enjoyable experience.
We hope to welcome them back to Wellford Gardens again in the future!
