Residents at Wellford Gardens have been saying “Hola!” as they embark on an exciting new journey – learning Spanish together.
The home recently welcomed Florencia for the first of its Spanish language sessions, introducing residents to new words and phrases in a relaxed, engaging and sociable environment.
Learning a foreign language can be a stimulating activity for older people, encouraging cognitive engagement while supporting confidence, self-esteem and social connection. For residents living with dementia, activities that introduce language, music, conversation and repetition can also provide enjoyable opportunities to participate and connect with others.
The first class proved a great success, with residents thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to learn, practise and challenge themselves while having plenty of fun along the way.
Rachel Joyce, Home Manager at Wellford Gardens, said:
We’re always looking for new and interesting experiences that give our residents opportunities to learn, connect and, most importantly, enjoy themselves. It was wonderful to see everyone getting involved and having fun with Spanish. You’re never too old to discover something new, and we’re really looking forward to seeing where this journey takes us.
A huge ¡Muchas gracias! to Florencia for delivering such a fantastic first class.
With plenty more words and phrases still to discover, this is just the beginning for Wellford Gardens’ budding Spanish speakers.
¡Hasta la próxima! – Until next time!
