Honouring Service and Memories at Icknield Court
Residents at Icknield Court Care Home came together to mark Remembrance Day, joining to watch the national service and observe the two-minute silence.
It was a poignant and meaningful moment for everyone, but especially for David, a resident whose own memories of service remain vivid to this day.
David was called up at just 18 years old and began his military journey at Bedford Barracks, where he spent his first Christmas away from home. He later joined the 60th Rifles Royal Green Jackets, a regiment known for its distinctive quick march of 180 steps per minute. Many of his officers were former Harrow schoolboys, the same school David had attended himself - a small but familiar link during those early days of service.
He and his platoon were later assigned to Greece, but just before departure, their mission was called off due to political unrest. Instead, David was sent to Egypt, where he spent time patrolling the Sinai Desert. On leave, he took the opportunity to visit some of the country’s most historic sites, such as the Pyramids, the Sphinx, and even travelled up the Nile, memories he recalls with great fondness.
David served proudly in the Green Berets for two years, wearing the regiment’s distinctive black buttons and red-trimmed stripes. As he reflected during the service, his thoughts were with those he served alongside and those who never returned home.
The gathering at Icknield Court was one of quiet reflection, shared memories, and deep gratitude and a moment to honour not just those who served, but the incredible lives and stories that continue to inspire everyone at the home.
