International Friendship Day at Avonbourne Care Centre
Residents at Avonbourne always ‘get by with a little help from their friends.’
We’re a sociable bunch at Avonbourne Care Centre, and that’s made all the easier by having lots of wonderful friends around us. Saturday 30 July is International Friendship Day, a chance to show appreciation and gratitude for all the good times.
In 1998, the United Nations named Winnie the Pooh as their global Ambassador of Friendship, and International Friendship Day came into being in 2011. Winne the Pooh says “I knew when I met you an adventure was going to happen,” and that’s how we feel about each other at Avonbourne; our friendly residents and team support each other to have a go at new things, whether that is to hold a snake when ZooLab or the animal farms come to visit, or throw some shapes on the dancefloor when one of the entertainers performs for us.
There are no rules for how to celebrate on International Friendship Day. We’ll be doing what we do best; singing, dancing, having a good natter, and spending time together.
Here are five ways to show your friends you appreciate them:
- Tell them! It sounds obvious, but it’s not easy for everyone, or else we just assume they know.
- Give them a hug
- Text them or call them if you won’t see them today
- Send them a card or a small gift
- Do something special together that represents your friendship
Perhaps there’s an old friend you haven’t heard from in a while – today is the perfect day to get in touch. The UN encourages everyone to mark the day in a way that is appropriate to them, their culture and their customs. We would love to hear how you are marking International Friendship Day.
