Not all heroes wear capes, some wear hats. Our hatted hero is Gerry Watkins from the Moonlight Eclipse Project for helping Paternoster House with their summer garden party for its residents, family members and the wider Cirencester community. The Moonlight Eclipse Project is an incredible initiative which supports charities, homeless individuals, low-income families, and vulnerable groups through dedicated fundraising efforts.
Meeting Gerry: The Catalyst for Our Garden Party
Sharon Dewsbury, Activity Coordinator at Paternoster House, first discovered Gerry through his fundraising initiatives for local good causes on social media. Impressed by his dedication and results, she reached out to see if he could assist in raising funds for their upcoming garden party on Saturday, August 3rd, aimed at bringing together residents, families, and the community.
In Paternoster House’s resident meetings, when asked what they wanted at their summer garden party, the resounding answer was: animals. Thanks to Gerry’s gracious acceptance and relentless efforts, he raised over £600, enabling them to include a farmyard, BBQ and entertainer for the event.
But Gerry’s contributions don’t stop at fundraising. He has also rallied the community, promoting both the event and Paternoster House.
About the Moonlight Eclipse Project
The Moonlight Eclipse Project is a beacon of hope for many. It provides vital support to various groups through innovative fundraising campaigns. Their efforts have made a significant impact on the lives of those in need, proving that a little help can go a long way in making a difference.
Gerry, the driving force behind the project, has a unique ability to bring people together for a common cause. His dedication is not just about raising money but also about fostering a sense of community and support. For 28 years, Gerry has been raising money for good causes, organising events across the country to support local communities. He ensures that funds go directly to those who can use them to enrich the lives of those in need. Beyond fundraising, Gerry donates his time to various community projects, such as transforming an old stable into a classroom.
Gerry’s Passion for Helping Others
When asked why he loves supporting these causes, Gerry shared:
"I believe that everyone deserves a helping hand at some point in their life. Whether it’s a family struggling to make ends meet or individuals facing homelessness, every bit of support counts. It’s incredibly fulfilling to see the direct impact our efforts have on the community. Knowing that we can bring a little joy and relief to others keeps me motivated."
Gerry also has a personal connection to care homes:
"Paternoster House is close to my heart. Both my parents were in care homes, and I saw firsthand how important care homes are in the community. So, when Sharon contacted me about helping Paternoster out, I couldn't refuse. When Sharon told me the money was for the farm animals to come in, I said that I could source a farm to come in for free and for them to use the money on other activities and entertainment to make Paternoster's garden party the very best it can be. We also have two Shetland ponies coming in for the residents who are bed-bound, so they don't miss out."
Helen Dearing, Regional Marketing Manager for OSJCT Paternoster, met Gerry earlier this year and was amazed by his fundraising initiatives for the local community. She describes Gerry as an absolute hero for what he does, and we are immensely grateful for his contributions.
The Joy of Animals for Our Residents
Our residents have a special love for animals and the affection they bring. Even when they can't physically pick them up, the presence of animals brings immense joy and comfort. Small ponies have been known to visit bed-bound residents, entering their rooms and spreading happiness. The simple act of interacting with these gentle creatures can brighten their day and provide emotional support.
