Joyce Tyrrell & ‘Elizabeth of Glamis’
Joyce Tyrrell having in her twenties, been a keen member of amateur dramatics, had read in the newspapers of the efforts to establish the new Pitlochry Festival Theatre – which due to shortage of materials post war followed London’s original Regents Park & Birmingham’s Arena Theatre being constructed in the form of a huge tent!

This was a development, followed and encouraged by Elizabeth Bowes Lyon - the Queen Mother, who had grown up in the district. Taking a summer holiday to the area, Joyce and family attended a wonderful production at this beautiful theatre. Also, as this was now open to the public, visited the impressive local Bowes Lyon residence at Glamis (silent ‘i’) with its tall towers, impressive ancient and Edwardian interiors and equally lovely gardens. At Glamis Castle, Joyce's family enjoyed a picnic lunch, surrounded by a large array of flower beds containing many beautiful roses.

Various flowers have been developed for the Queen Mother, however none better than the one Joyce obtained for her family garden in North Yorkshire. ‘Elizabeth of Glamis’. Over the years, this became Joyce’s firm favourite, no doubt due to its beautiful clusters of salmon pink flowers and its equally heavenly scent. Joyce can’t wait to see the rose grow, bloom, producing its perfumed scent once again, and to be able to share this with all of the residents and visitors to the Henry Cornish gardens.
