Lake House celebrates the opening of their new dementia-friendly sensory garden
New garden designed for residents
A new garden designed for residents living with dementia has opened at Lake House in Banbury.
The care home’s garden, which is accessible to all in the local community, has been especially designed for Lake House residents who are living with dementia. Dementia-friendly features include sensory plants and flowers with lots of colour, texture and scent; thoughtfully placed rails; quiet areas; soft ground surfaces; and mature trees for shade. Movement in the garden is provided by grasses and tall planting. Visitors to the garden can explore the large open lawn area; a ‘Man Cave’ and greenhouse; a decorative dove cote; a vegetable garden; as well as a beautifully constructed covered seating area – perfect for entertainment.
The benefits gardens can have on people of all ages are well documented. For people living with dementia, gardens can improve mental and physical wellbeing through physical activity, stimulating the senses, and inspiring memories. They are also important places for relaxation and socialising.
Designed and built by Cotswold Estates and Gardens, the garden at Lake House took three years to plan. The garden has been used by residents for the past year, but was closed to the wider community due to Covid-19 restrictions. To celebrate the new garden, residents and their families and friends, members of the local community, and employees at the home were finally able to join in a grand opening event on Saturday 20 August. Entertainment by Sparky & Sprite added to the fun atmosphere and local caterer Mrs Teas provided delicious food and drinks.
Alex Grindle, OSJCT Home Manager, said, “The garden’s been a long project, but it’s been worth it. The residents love it, and with the layout of the home – all on one level – it’s easily accessible and visible for everyone.”
Trevor Hunt of Cotswold Estates and Gardens added, “There’s been such a big change from what was here to start with. From a personal perspective, it’s been a great contract because it’s nice to make such a difference to the lives of the residents, and the garden was designed with them in mind.”
