The Lakes Care Centre marked Stress Awareness Day with a special and informative visit from Diane Tanner, a certified Buteyko Breathing Specialist and Breathwork Coach, who spent time with both our staff and residents sharing the benefits of mindful breathing.
Diane introduced everyone to a range of simple breathing techniques and explained how the way we breathe can have a positive impact on our physical and emotional wellbeing. From helping to manage stress and anxiety to promoting relaxation and a greater sense of calm, her session highlighted just how powerful something as natural as breathing can be.
Staff and residents thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to learn some practical breathing exercises, discovering techniques they can easily incorporate into their everyday routines to support their wellbeing.
Stress Awareness Day also provides an important opportunity to recognise the demands and challenges faced by colleagues working in care homes. Caring for others is incredibly rewarding, but it can also be physically and emotionally demanding. From providing compassionate, person-centred care to supporting residents and their families, care teams give so much of themselves every day.
Taking time to recognise stress, prioritise mental health and encourage open conversations about wellbeing is essential. Looking after our colleagues and supporting their wellbeing is just as important as the care and compassion they provide to our residents.
Stress awareness is equally important when it comes to the wellbeing of our residents. Moving into a care home, adjusting to new surroundings, changes in routine or being away from familiar people and places can sometimes bring feelings of worry or anxiety.
As a care team, it is important that we recognise the signs of stress, take time to listen and provide reassurance, comfort and emotional support. Creating a calm, positive and understanding environment helps residents feel safe, valued and supported, while encouraging opportunities to relax, socialise and enjoy everyday life.

It's so important that we take time to look after our mental and emotional wellbeing, both as individuals and as a team. Working in care is incredibly rewarding, but we also recognise the importance of supporting our colleagues and residents to manage stress and feel their best. This session was a wonderful reminder of how even the simplest things can make a real difference. It was lovely to see our residents and staff getting involved, learning new techniques and enjoying the experience together. We'd like to say a huge thank you to Diane for sharing her knowledge and helping us all discover new ways to relax, manage stress and support our wellbeing.
A huge thank you to Diane for sharing her time, knowledge and expertise with us. It was a lovely, engaging and informative session, enjoyed by everyone who took part, and we are incredibly grateful for her visit.
At The Lakes Care Centre, we believe that supporting wellbeing is important at every age. By creating opportunities to learn, connect and take time for ourselves, we continue to promote a positive, caring and supportive environment where both our residents and colleagues can thrive.
