Langford View host St Davids Barracks in Bicester

Langford View marked VE Day with residents and soldiers from St David’s Barracks, sharing music, memories, and reflection, strengthening a growing intergenerational community partnership.

Langford View marked VE Day with a heartfelt celebration, bringing together residents, families, the local community, and soldiers from St David’s Barracks in Bicester.

The connection with the Army began earlier this year when Kevin from Ambrosden first approached the home with an idea to develop a community partnership between local soldiers and residents. The aim was to create opportunities for shared activities, conversation, and companionship across generations. Following an initial pause in communication over the Christmas period, the project was revived in February 2026, when a group of eight soldiers expressed strong interest in getting involved.

The soldiers’ first visit to Langford View took place during a coffee morning, where they were warmly welcomed by residents, families, and staff. What began as an introductory meeting quickly developed into a lively and engaging session, with conversations flowing easily between residents and soldiers. Stories were shared about military life, family histories, and personal memories, including reflections on wartime experiences. The visit proved to be the beginning of a valued and growing relationship.

This developing partnership provided a meaningful backdrop for the VE Day commemorations.

On VE Day, Langford View was filled with music, reflection, and remembrance as residents and soldiers came together to mark the occasion. Wartime songs helped set the tone for the day, prompting memories and conversations among residents, some of whom shared their own recollections of life during the Second World War. Others spoke about family stories passed down through generations, ensuring that lived experience remained at the heart of the celebration.

The soldiers from St David’s Barracks joined residents throughout the day, listening to stories and sharing their own experiences of service. The event created a strong sense of connection and mutual respect, highlighting the importance of remembrance and the value of intergenerational relationships.

Patricia Pita, Home Manager of Langford View, said:

“VE Day is a deeply important occasion for our residents, and this year it was made even more special by the relationships that have developed with our local soldiers. Seeing residents and soldiers come together so naturally, sharing stories and reflection, was incredibly moving and a true celebration of community spirit.”

As the event came to a close, residents expressed their appreciation for the soldiers’ involvement, with many hoping the partnership would continue to develop further in the future.
