Making furry friends to raise awareness of Alzheimer's
Spencer Court is drawing attention to the benefits of animal therapy to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s.
Many of us will know the joy experienced from owning a pet or spending some time in the company of a friendly animal. In fact, studies have shown that regular interaction with animals can have a positive effect on mood and alleviate symptoms of loneliness, depression and forms of dementia such as Alzheimer’s.
At Spencer Court, a volunteer will be delivering a talk at the home on the benefits of animal therapy and will be attending together with one of their behaviourally assessed dogs. Therapy dogs are specially trained to interact with residents in a calming and therapeutic way so Spencer Court residents will make a new furry friend during the visit. Following this, an exciting trip to Cotswold Wildlife Park is planned, where residents will enjoy getting to know more exotic animals such as rhinos, giraffes and meerkats.
Angie Williams, one of OSJCT’s specialist dementia Admiral Nurses, says: “I am proud that homes across OSJCT like Spencer Court are participating in various activities to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s. Many hundreds of thousands of families in the UK are affected by Alzheimer’s, so it is important we use opportunities like these to demonstrate ways to enhance the lives of those living with the condition.”
