Marden Court and Jamie’s Farm

Marden Court, part of The Orders of St John Care Trust (OSJCT), is celebrating the success of its unique partnership with Jamie’s Farm, Lower Shockerwick, Bath as the current phase of visits draws to a close on 1st April.

The collaboration, known as the “Marden/Jamie’s Farm Common Ground Programme”, has brought together residents and young people through shared experiences on the farm, creating meaningful connections that span generations.

Since launching following an initial trial visit in December, the programme has provided regular opportunities for residents to engage with young people in hands-on farm activities, shared meals, and, most importantly, conversation.

At the heart of the initiative has been the power of intergenerational connection. By sharing stories, life experiences, and perspectives, both residents and young people have benefited from a rich exchange of knowledge and understanding.

These interactions have:

  • Fostered mutual learning and respect between generations
  • Helped to bridge generational gaps and challenge age-related stereotypes
  • Supported confidence, communication, and emotional wellbeing
  • Strengthened community ties and built lasting personal connections

Residents have enjoyed opportunities to mentor and share life experiences, while also gaining fresh perspectives from the younger generation, particularly around new ideas, skills, and ways of thinking.

The programme has also played a role in challenging ageism, highlighting the value that both older and younger people bring to society when given the opportunity to connect in meaningful ways.

Staff at Marden Court have praised the positive impact on residents, noting improvements in mood, engagement, and overall wellbeing following each visit.

Although 1st April marks the final scheduled visit in this current phase, both organisations are keen to build on the success of the programme and explore future opportunities to continue the partnership.

This initiative stands as a powerful example of how collaboration between care providers and community organisations can create enriching experiences that benefit individuals of all ages.
