Marden Court residents step out for Breast Cancer Now in inspiring Sponsored Walk

Residents, families and members of the local community came together at Marden Court Care Centre for a heartwarming sponsored walk in support of Breast Cancer Now, demonstrating that determination, kindness and community spirit can make a real difference.

Despite the less-than-ideal weather, residents were determined not to let a little rain dampen their spirits as they proudly donned their special Breast Cancer Now T-shirts and took part in a sponsored walk from the care home to the car park and back.

The event brought together residents, relatives, colleagues and members of the local community, who offered encouragement and support every step of the way. There were plenty of smiles, laughter and cheers as participants completed their walk, united by a shared commitment to raising awareness and supporting those affected by breast cancer.

Adding to the celebrations, Mayor Tim Havenith joined the event to personally present each participant with a medal in recognition of their efforts. It was a particularly proud moment for residents, who were delighted to receive recognition for their achievements.

Following the walk, everyone gathered in the home's lounge for some well-earned refreshments and a selection of delicious homemade cakes, freshly prepared by Marden Court's cook, Dawn. The celebrations provided a wonderful opportunity for residents, families and supporters to come together, reflect on the day's achievements and enjoy each other's company.

Dawn Watts, Activity Coordinator at Marden Court, commented:

We are incredibly proud of all our residents who took part in this special sponsored walk. Their enthusiasm, determination and willingness to support such an important cause were truly inspiring. It was wonderful to see families, colleagues and members of our local community coming together to encourage everyone along the way. Having the Mayor present medals to our residents made the occasion even more memorable and gave everyone a real sense of achievement. Events like this remind us that age is no barrier to making a positive difference, and we're delighted to have supported Breast Cancer Now.

Supporting an Important Cause

Breast Cancer Now is a leading UK breast cancer research and support charity, working to improve the lives of people affected by breast cancer through pioneering research, information and specialist support.

Events such as Marden Court's sponsored walk play an important role in raising awareness, encouraging conversations about breast health and bringing communities together in support of a cause that touches so many lives.

The Importance of Meaningful Activities for Care Home Residents

Events like this play a vital role in supporting the physical, emotional and social wellbeing of care home residents. Taking part in fundraising activities provides opportunities to stay physically active, build confidence, maintain independence and experience a genuine sense of purpose and achievement. Just as importantly, supporting a charitable cause allows older people to continue making valuable contributions to society, reinforcing their sense of identity, belonging and connection with the wider community. Bringing residents together with families, volunteers and local supporters also helps reduce social isolation, encourages meaningful conversations and creates lasting memories. At Marden Court, these experiences are an important part of person-centred care, recognising that later life should continue to offer opportunities for personal fulfilment, new experiences and making a positive difference to others.

The sponsored walk was a wonderful reminder that every step, however small, can make a meaningful difference.

A huge congratulations to everyone who took part, and a heartfelt thank you to the families, community members, colleagues and supporters who helped make the day such a memorable success.

At Marden Court, it wasn't simply about the distance walked, but the difference made together.
