Meet Lynn, who inspired residents and supporters to knit 900 knitted poppies

Volunteer Lynn Edwards organised a cascade of hand knitted poppies for display at the Malmesbury Care Home, run by OSJCT. The poppies will be on view at the front of the building from 3 – 13 November.
Lynn is pictured in front of the poppy display with Home Manager Rieke Jacobs, who presented her with chocolates and flowers in appreciation for all the time and hard work Lynn has put into this exciting project.
The poppies were knitted by residents and staff at the home as well as relatives, friends, volunteers and members of the community. The idea came from Lynn Edwards, who joined as an OSJCT volunteer in September, three months after her mother, Dorothy Benjamin, who had lived at the care home since 2017, passed away.
Lynn said: “The carers at OSJCT Athelstan House are like angels with wings, they have a true vocation. I’m so grateful to the care they gave to my mum and I wanted to give something back. I find it a comfort to spend time at the home and get involved in activities for residents as a volunteer. Spending time with them and seeing their smiles is amazing.”
“I’d always enjoyed joining the home’s knit and natter groups with mum. She had been a talented needlewoman. Due to a stroke, in later years she could only knit with one hand and I’d simplified patterns for her. Knitting poppies is relatively straightforward and everyone could get involved. Creating the cascade has been a focus for the whole home. It is amazing to see the group efforts collected in one visual display.”
