Meet the New Manager at Bourne House
Amy Thorne is the new Home Manager at Bourne House, the residential home at Avonbourne Care Centre. She moved to Bourne House in May from Marden Court in Calne.
Amy is settling in well at Bourne House and is enjoying the variety, where truly, no two days are the same. For Amy, knowing that there is no such thing as a typical day, and that anything can – and often does! – happen during the course of her time at work is all part of the job, and something that makes it both exciting and rewarding.
Amy says, “I love making a difference to people’s lives,” and that means her residents but also her team. “I think one of the most rewarding things is being able to train and support the team, seeing new carers coming into the industry, and being able to help them and reassure them. That was me once, and now I enjoy showing them that this is a great sector, finding out what they’re passionate about and translating that into their role.”
She previously worked with Age UK and found that doing small amounts with the charity and community made her want to do more, which led her to apply for a position at her local care home. Amy recalls her first day, when she was unsure about the role and wondered whether she had thought everything through.
“I remember a resident on that first day who commented on liking my shoes. It was a really small thing but it stuck with me. I went back the next day to show her another pair of shoes and a lovely friendship developed.”
That relationship and other friendships with residents and colleagues is what helped Amy’s career develop. Now, Amy is continuing her study alongside the full-time Home Manager role, and will complete her Level 5 Health & Social Care qualification in October. She is also a Moving & Handling Trainer, and a Fire Awareness Trainer.
Out of work Amy enjoys live music and has worked at Glastonbury Festival several times. She also enjoys country fairs and farmers markets, and visiting heritage sites around the country.
