Mike goes 'back to the floor' as Wellford Gardens Home Manager for a day
Celebrating careers in care for Professional Care Workers' Week
Mike Stredder (pictured above second from right), Group Operations Director, recently spent a full day ‘back to the floor’ at Wellford Gardens in Wheatley, Oxford, stepping into the shoes of a Home Manager to experience the rhythm, challenges and joys of daily life in an OSJCT care home.
Mike began his day bright and early at 7:30am, eager to connect with the night team and witness the seamless handover to the day staff. He said: “I was reminded of how busy the day in the life of a Home Manager is. There’s so much going on — from coordinating care to supporting families and managing the home’s operations. It’s a balancing act, and our team does it brilliantly.”
Later that morning he joined the home’s daily ‘10 at 10’ meeting, where colleagues from all departments gathered to share priorities, highlight the resident of the day and flag any important updates. Mike was struck by the synchronisation and communication between teams — a testament to the strong culture of collaboration at Wellford Gardens.
Despite the busy schedule, Mike made time for spending quality time with residents. He called this: “the best part of working in a home, moments filled with joy and connection”. This included chatting over a meal of fish and chips, and enjoying the sounds of the live jazz band performing in the home.
One particularly special interaction was with Jonathan, a resident who, like Mike, hails from Nottinghamshire. “We discovered we both know the same village — it was a lovely reminder of how small the world can feel when you take the time to talk.”
Mike also had the pleasure of spending time with Eve, the home’s new receptionist. He said: “She’s only been with us a couple of months, but you’d think she’d been here for years. Her bright smile and warm welcome set the tone for everyone who walks through our doors.”
Reflecting on the day, Mike couldn’t help but express his admiration for the Wellford Gardens team. He said: “I’m constantly impressed by the great care our colleagues give to residents. Regardless of their role, every person contributes to the positive experience our residents enjoy. We’re so fortunate to have such happy, dedicated people who go above and beyond to put smiles on faces.”
