Millbrook Lodge Residents’ Cheesy Bank Holiday
We were delighted to be invited to wrap this year’s cheeses, once again, for the infamous Cooper’s Hill Cheese Rolling event.
Every year, on Spring Bank Holiday, the scenic Gloucestershire countryside plays host to one of the more eccentric English sporting traditions: the Cooper’s Hill Cheese Rolling.
The Cooper's Hill Cheese Rolling event is a tradition that dates back to the early 1800s. This thrilling and somewhat eccentric event sees participants chasing a round of Double Gloucester cheese down the steep and uneven hill, vying to catch the coveted wheel and claim victory. The event attracts participants and spectators from around the world, eager to witness this remarkable spectacle.
Cooper’s Hill is just behind our home at Millbrook Lodge in Brockworth, and for several years, our residents have played an important part in the event; we have been wrapping the cheese wheels that are chased down the hill by fearless competitors.
The Wrapping Process
The cheese wrapping process began with a delivery of Double Gloucester cheese wheels. Under the guidance of our dedicated cheesemakers, residents got together to wrap the cheese. Using traditional methods, residents carefully wrapped each wheel, ensuring it was well-protected for its high-speed journey down Cooper's Hill. To add a personal touch, residents signed the wheels.
Many of our residents have fond memories of past cheese rolling events, and for some, this was their first introduction to this quirky tradition. There was definitely a buzz around the home as the event day approached. This shared experience, and being able to contribute to such an important local tradition, is a highlight of our year, reinforcing our commitment to staying connected with our community and its traditions.
Looking Ahead
Participating in the Cooper's Hill Cheese Rolling event by wrapping cheese wheels has been a rewarding experience for everyone involved. We look forward to continuing this tradition in the years to come, celebrating the unique ways our residents can engage with and support our vibrant community.
