Monkscroft residents write and star in mystery movie, The Monkscroft Thursday Club
“We need a crime to solve, how about a good murder?” “There’s never a good murder.”
Residents at Monkscroft Care Centre, run by not-for-profit care provider The Orders of St John Care Trust in Cheltenham, have created their own suspense film inspired by the title and retirement community setting of Richard Osman’s murder mystery series.
Resident Judith Green wrote the script and starred in the film alongside four other residents, Patricia Jeal, Fred McKnight, Peter James, and Sarah Jones. The youngest cast member in the production is 72 while the oldest is 88.
The project was brought to life under the guidance of Activities Co-ordinator Rachel Mechan, who took on the role of production assistant and filmed and edited the movie using just a mobile phone. Other members of the care team also make cameo appearances, and props were sourced from charity shops and personal collections.
Judith’s original script involved several rewrites to help the actors feel more relaxed about the length of their lines. With the help of Activities Co-ordinator Sarah Davis, who took on the role of production assistant, and much skilful cutting and splicing by Rachel, the script got to the point where the actors were ad-libbing.
The 20-minute film follows a group of friends in a care home looking to do something exciting, who are swept into solving a mystery involving a missing diamond ring. With unexpected twists, a surprise ending, and plenty of laughs along the way, the film was a hit at the red carpet premiere—with families and friends quick to give a standing ovation and present the stars with their very own ‘Star of Fame’ awards.
Judith said: “I usually write poetry, I never imagined I’d write a film script, cast a production, or collaborate with the care team to shoot scenes. It’s been great fun and I’m so proud of the actors and what they’ve achieved.”
Rachel added: “This film is typical of our residents’ approach to life—thinking outside the box and being as inclusive as possible. We’re already looking forward to doing a Christmas version, maybe a pantomime—and who knows what our next film direction will look like! The residents will decide!”
The cast has sent the film to Richard Osman, inviting him to give feedback. Judith added: “It would be brilliant to know what he thinks! The film has helped spark a new wave of creativity and confidence amongst us all, and for me, it’s an inspiration to keep writing.”
