Nigel Stourton CBE, former OSJCT Chair
Announcement
Dan Hayes, Chief Executive, said: "I am very sorry to share the sad news that Nigel Stourton died peacefully on 22 June 2021, surrounded by his family."
Nigel was key to the establishment of the Trust. In 1991, OSJCT’s sponsoring Catholic order, The British Association of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, invited Nigel to join the Steering Committee to consider Lincolnshire County Council’s search for an organisation to take responsibility for running 16 of their care homes for older people. When all of those Lincolnshire homes came under the Trust’s management. Nigel became Alternate Chair of the OSJCT Trustees in 1999 and Chair in 2001.
Nigel was OSJCT Chair until 2007. It was during this time that Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, and latterly Gloucestershire homes join the Trust. Nigel was with the Trust for all of its firsts, and having stood down from his duties as Chairman, he remained a firm friend of our homes, attending as many events as he could throughout each year and delighting in the updates from colleagues and residents at each visit, and in between.
Dan continued: "Nigel was an incredibly warm man, with time for everyone, and an extraordinary ability to remember names, faces and voices - always knowing exactly who had answered a telephone. We have not seen him as much in recent years, and sadly last year the pandemic meant that we didn't see him at all.
"Nigel will be remembered by those that worked with him or met him. He was a shining example of dedication and commitment to the welfare of others for many years. We'll think of him often."
