Celebrating 13 Years at OSJCT: Joanna Dowejko Reflects on her journey to England and a career in health and social care

Joanna Dowejko’s journey with OSJCT began on 8 April 2013, when she arrived in England from Gdańsk, Poland, and was welcomed at Luton Airport by an OSJCT colleague. Trained as a nurse, Jo brought with her a quiet determination, strong clinical knowledge and a clear sense of purpose. From her very first days at The Meadows, it was evident she wasn’t just here to do a job – she was here to make a difference.

Jo quickly became known for her calm, compassionate approach and her commitment to truly person-centred care. She took time to understand each resident as an individual, always going the extra mile to ensure dignity, safety and kindness were at the heart of everything she did. Her colleagues noticed it too – Jo led by example, supporting others and never asking more of her team than she would give herself.

In 2017, Jo progressed into the role of Deputy Manager at the newly opened Chilterns Court. It was a natural step for someone who had already demonstrated strong leadership qualities. As Deputy, she became a steady and trusted presence, supporting staff development, encouraging learning and helping to build a positive, supportive culture within the home.

Jo’s commitment and resilience led her to the role of Home Manager at Chilterns Court in 2019, where she now leads the 64-bed home with the same passion that has defined her career from the start. As both a nurse and a leader, Jo brings a unique balance of clinical expertise and humanity, setting high standards while leading with kindness and clarity. Under her leadership, the home continues to grow, with a strong focus on teamwork, quality care and ensuring every resident feels safe, respected and truly at home.

Outside of work, Jo’s love of England is clear. Growing up in the large city of Gdańsk, she was fascinated from a young age by English history – particularly the Tudors and Henry VIII and his six wives – and is also a lifelong Harry Potter fan. Moving to England had always been her dream, and today she feels at home among the quintessential English towns and villages, now living in Wantage. As Jo often says, dreams really can come true.

Reflecting on her journey, Jo says:
“I always wanted to come to England, even as a child. To build my life and career here, and to lead a home where residents truly feel at home, means everything to me.”

Maggie Coleman, Jo’s Manager, adds:
“From the moment Jo joined Chilterns Court as Deputy Manager, it was clear she brought something special. She led with quiet confidence, strong clinical knowledge, and genuine compassion for both residents and her team. Watching her grow into the Home Manager role has been a privilege. She has truly earned every step of her journey through dedication, resilience, and heart.”

As Jo celebrates 13 years with OSJCT, her story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible through dedication, opportunity and care. From arriving in a new country to leading a thriving care home, Jo’s journey continues to inspire colleagues and residents alike.
