Didcot mayor attends Battle of Britain afternoon tea

Residents at Stirlings Care Home enjoyed a special Battle of Britain afternoon tea, welcoming Wantage Mayor, Councillor Dr Iain Cameron, for an afternoon of conversation, reminiscence and friendly competition.

The visit was an opportunity to spend time with residents, including veterans and veterans’ spouses, as they came together to remember and honour the courage and sacrifice of those who served during the Battle of Britain.
The afternoon included a Battle of Britain quiz, which brought out everyone’s competitive side. There was plenty of friendly rivalry, laughter and impressive historical knowledge as residents enjoyed taking part together.

Catherine Barthe, Home Manager at Stirlings, said: “It was lovely to welcome Mayor Iain to Stirlings and spend time remembering the courage and sacrifice of those who served. We’re proud to be working towards Veteran Friendly accreditation and want to make sure our veterans and their families feel recognised, valued and supported. It was a really enjoyable afternoon, and the quiz certainly brought out everyone’s competitive side!”

Resident Doug added: “I really enjoyed the afternoon. It was lovely to get together, share memories and take part in the quiz. It’s important that we remember those who served, and it was nice to see everyone taking an interest and enjoying themselves.”

Stirlings is working towards achieving Veteran Friendly accreditation, demonstrating its commitment to recognising and supporting veterans and their families. The home values the experiences and contributions of those who have served and is working to ensure their stories and needs remain an important part of life at Stirlings.

Unfortunately, Sergeant Robert from the British Army was unable to attend on this occasion, but he is looking forward to visiting the home soon. The team at Stirlings looks forward to welcoming him in the future.

A big thank you to Councillor Dr Iain Cameron for taking the time to visit residents and be part of such a meaningful afternoon.

The event was a lovely opportunity to bring people together, share memories and recognise the contribution of those who have served.

Lest we forget.
