Remembrance Day at Avonbourne Care Centre
Avonbourne Care Centre welcomed soldiers from the 19th Regiment Royal Artillery into the home as part of their Remembrance Day activities.
Remembrance Day is always important to us at Avonbourne Care Centre. Many of our residents have served themselves, or have close family ties with the military. We were delighted to be able to spend some time with current soldiers this year when members of the 19th Regiment Royal Artillery joined us for coffee and a chat. We listened to their stories, and recounted our own. Resident Ron shared his story of the D-Day Landings, and Bill showed his ID card from when he worked at Porton.
Ivan really enjoyed meeting the soldiers and sharing many of his military stories and Michael wore his military beret for the occasion. We were delighted Michael’s wife was also able to join us.
Alix Williams-Duffield, Activities Co-ordinator at Avonbourne, organised the event. She said, “So many of us here have close ties with military so Remembrance Day always has a special meaning for us. I feel that sharing the old stories with the new is a great way of supporting our soldiers and keeping the stories alive.”
We are grateful to Sgt Mutch and his colleagues for taking the time to visit us. Residents also enjoyed a performance from Daisy Chain, who sang lots of old favourite songs, and some flower arranging with Moonraker & Rose Florist to create some commemorative displays.
