Residents and colleagues from Spencer Court in Woodstock, Henry Cornish Care Centre in Chipping Norton, and Moorside Place in Kidlington came together for the inaugural “Spencer and Friends Do Strictly Come Dancing”, a sparkling celebration of music, movement, and community.
The event followed weeks of preparation, beginning in late November when Hannah Jones of Leggett School of Dance taught the residents two routines—a waltz and a cha cha. Residents from Henry Cornish, including Mary, a former ballroom dancer, and Joyce, whose parents taught ballroom, were keen to reconnect with their dance roots. At Moorside Place, Jill, who has been dancing since the age of four, joined Mitch and Mark in perfecting their steps. Residents from Spencer Court, including Jim, Eric, Pam, Val, Allan, and Rhona, added energy and personality to their routines, practicing diligently in the run up to the big day.
The January event was a glittering spectacle. Residents and team members dazzled in sparkly tops, sequined outfits, and glitzy ties, bringing energy and joy to the floor. Jim reflected on the experience: “Absolutely brilliant! Had the best time and can’t wait for next year already.” Jill also shared her delight: “It was lovely to go back to my dancing roots. 10/10 for today!”
Judging was provided by a panel including Angela Champ, Home Manager of Spencer Court; Kayleigh Cross, Area Operations Manager; Renata Crisostomo, Divisional Director; and Helen Dearing, Regional Marketing Manager. The judges praised the skill, dedication, and enthusiasm of all participants, noting that every performance showcased both the hard work and the joy residents brought to the day.
After the formal judging had taken place, the floor opened up for everyone to join in.
Residents and team members enthusiastically joined the Conga, the Macarena, and other group dances, keeping the energy and laughter going well after the routines ended.
Hannah Jones highlighted the wider benefits of the event: “Music and dance are powerful expressions. Seeing residents with a range of care needs light up as soon as the music starts is just wonderful. Dance brings joy, encourages social interaction, and allows residents to revisit something that has been part of their lives for years.”
The event celebrated not only the joy of movement but also the friendships and shared experiences formed between residents from different OSJCT homes. Many participants have long histories with dance, from formal ballroom experience to childhood lessons, and the event offered them a chance to share their passion while enjoying the company of others.
Following the success of the first “Spencer and Friends Do Strictly”, OSJCT plans to invite more homes and schemes across Oxfordshire to join next year, expanding the celebration of music, movement, and community even further. “We’re all practising for next year— we’ll keeeeeep dancing!”
